Les pyramides de Gizeh, 4 500 ans au bord du désertThe pyramids of Giza, 4,500 years at the edge of the desert
On the edge of Cairo, three pyramids and a sphinx have watched over the desert for more than 4,500 years. A visit to the only Wonder of the Ancient World still standing.
Trois pyramides, trois pharaons

Three pyramids, three pharaohs
On the Giza plateau, just west of Cairo, three great pyramids stand side by side. The largest was built for the pharaoh Khufu, around 2560 BC. The other two belong to Khafre and Menkaure.
The Great Pyramid was originally about 146 metres tall. For more than 3,800 years, it was the tallest structure ever built by human hands. It is made of more than two million blocks of stone, cut and moved without any machines.
The Sphinx, guardian of the plateau
Right next to the pyramids lies the Great Sphinx: the body of a lion and the head of a human, carved directly into the rock. It is about 73 metres long and 20 metres high: a true giant of stone!
The last of the Seven Wonders
In ancient times, Greek travellers drew up a list of the Seven Wonders of the World. From the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to the Lighthouse of Alexandria, they have all disappeared… except the Great Pyramid. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
Explorer's tips
- Come early in the morning: it is cooler and the light is beautiful.
